Best Movement for Lipedema / Lipoedema

How Can Personal Trainers Help Clients with Lipedema?

by Kathleen Lisson, CLT

Fitness Professional Peggy Merrill shares information on movement and adipose tissue disorders in this presentation from the Fat Disorders Research Society. How can personal trainers and Certified Lymphedema Therapists motivate lipedema / lipoedema clients to move a little every hour rather than 'chunk' our exercise time into the traditional daily workout?

  • Urge clients to move in little "snacks" throughout the day - it adds up!
  • Model proper seated posture and methods to vary posture to loosen tight muscles and strengthen core - clients can reduce soreness and tightness with posture changes.
  • Her favorite types of exercise for lipedema are: walking, water exercise, Qi Gong, Nordic Track, and strength training.

This is a great reminder of the principle of NEAT (nonexercise activity thermogenesis) I learned in the UCSD Extension Exercise Science program. Read more aobut NEAT here: https://www.health.harvard.edu/diet-and-weight-loss/use-the-neat-factor-nonexercise-activity-thermogenesis-to-burn-calories
